Their meeting with Trump at the White House on Thursday was during their two-day visit to the U.S.; in fact, this was their first meeting post-Trump assuming office on January 20; however, one of the moments at the press conference has gone viral, where Trump seemed to steer away from a question about anti-India activities in the U.S. by saying he could not understand the reporter because of the “accent.”

In a room packed with reporters, as an Indian journalist posed a question about anti-India activities in the United States to Trump in the presence of PM Modi, Trump claimed he could not hear the question: “You’re gonna have to go louder…” On attempting to repeat the question, Trump said: “I can’t understand a word he’s saying. It’s the accent; it’s a little bit tough for me.”
Not His First Time
It isn’t the first time that Trump has made such comments. Only last week, he used similar words against an Afghan woman journalist at a press conference with Israeli PM Netanyahu. “It is a beautiful voice and a beautiful accent. The only problem is, I can’t understand a word you’re saying. But I just say this—good luck, live in peace.”
Key Events of PM Modi’s US Visit
- PM Modi’s visit commenced on Thursday with a meeting with Michael Waltz, National Security Adviser.
- He went on to meet tech billionaire Elon Musk at the Blair House where he was being hosted. Pictures of Modi interacting with Musk’s son X were all over social media.
- The PM also caught up with Indian-American entrepreneur and Republican leader Vivek Ramaswamy.
- At the White House, Trump welcomed Modi with a hug saying, “We missed you, we missed you a lot.”
- The two leaders then went on to talk about bilateral relations and strategic partnerships.
The visit signifies ongoing cooperation between India and the U.S. contrary to the backdrop of the scandal of Trump’s remarks during the press conference.
