High Court Orders Status Report on Isha Foundation

The inquiry came following an order issued by the Madras High Court to furnish a status report by officials regarding cases pertaining to the foundation. This was in light of a petition by retired professor S. Kamaraj from Coimbatore.

Kamaraj alleged that his two daughters were “brainwashed” to stay at the Isha Foundation, while contact with their family was not permitted. He also alleged that his daughters were hindered from making sound judgments on their own accord in leaving the premises.

Isha Foundation Denies Allegations

Amid the inquiry, the Isha Foundation came up with a formal rebuttal stating with clarity the allegations to be wrong. The foundation claims that all those who reside on the premises do so entirely of their own will without any coercion.

“They have clearly stated that they are staying in Isha Yoga Center on their own volition”. The statement added emphasizing that neither forceful holding or influence is exerted upon any individual and that those in the organization carry both the freedom and wisdom to choose their path.

Controversy Over Sale of Sadhguru’s Footprint Photograph

As to the ongoing controversy, several social media users have raised notice of an unusual item on Isha Foundation’s website— a framed photo of Sadhguru’s feet being sold for ₹3,200. A user released a screenshot of this product, which has led to disquieting discussions regarding commercialization of spiritual icons.

The product, titled “Sadhguru Padam Photo”, was marketed on the website as a way to deepen one’s spiritual connection with the guru. The item description included:

“A Guru’s feet are revered because they are the pathway to access the Guru’s energy. The very act of bowing down to a Guru’s feet enhances one’s proximity and builds a deeper connection with the Guru.”

Moreover, devotees are encouraged to “bring grace home” with the framed photo that measures 17.5″ x 12.5″ and is heralded as a means to strengthen one’s connection with Sadhguru.

Investigation and Public Reaction

The investigation of the Isha Foundation has reopened public discourse related to the role of spiritual organizations, their control over followers, and the degree of freedom permitted for individuals who choose to stay within such organizations.

With the directive of the Madras High Court, it is expected that the authorities will land an investigation and bring out the results regarding any legal or ethical issues in common with the foundation. Solicitations against the foundation’s practices and commercial activities remain a trending topic of public discussion and social media conversation.
