Meet Atishi Marlena, Delhi's Next Chief Minister

Atishi Marlena, a highly respected and influential member of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), is poised to become the new Chief Minister of Delhi following the announcement of Arvind Kejriwal’s resignation on September 15. Born on June 8, 1981, Atishi comes from a family deeply immersed in the academic world in Delhi. Her parents, Vijay Singh and Tripta Wahi, are esteemed professors at Delhi University.

Early Years and Education

Atishi began her academic journey in Delhi, where she finished her secondary education at Springdales School, Pusa Road. She then pursued her undergraduate degree in History from St. Stephen’s College in 2001. Her academic prowess continued at Oxford University, where she obtained a master’s degree in history in 2003 on a Chevening scholarship. She then spent time at Magdalen College as a Rhodes scholar in 2005.

Entrance into Politics

Atishi joined the AAP in January 2013 and played a pivotal role in policy formulation, drawing from her experiences during the Anti-Corruption Movement in India. Her activism gained prominence during the Jal Satyagraha in Khandwa district, Madhya Pradesh 2015. In 2019, she contested the Lok Sabha elections from East Delhi but faced a significant defeat. However, she made a strong comeback in the 2020 Delhi Legislative Assembly elections, securing victory in the Kalkaji constituency.

Cabinet Appointment and Legislative Responsibilities

Following her electoral success, Atishi was inducted into the Delhi government as a Cabinet Minister, filling the positions left vacant by the resignations of Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and Health Minister Satyender Jain. She served as the Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee and was involved with several other committees focused on Women and Child Welfare, Minority Welfare, and Education.
